I Train Alone!

I Train Alone,
Yeah, with nobody else.
Yeah, you know when I train alone, I prefer to be by myself.

Now, every morning, just before breakfast,
I don't want no coffee or tea.
Just me and my good buddy Saucony.
That's all I ever need.

I Train Alone,
Yeah, with nobody else. (repeat)

Yeah, you know when I train alone, I prefer to be by myself.

Well, the other night I got invited to a workout,
but I stayed at home instead.
Just me and my pal Fuji and Spinervals
And his brothers pain and sweat.

Ok, Enough of that. George Thorogood's song "I drink alone", while amusing, is kind of stupid. And my adaptation may even be worse. ;-) But it goes through my head frequently because of my work and family schedule. I find that I train alone ALL the time. And you know what, for the most part I prefer it that way. But sometimes, no frequently, it gets old. I really need to figure out a bike, swim or run with others a little more frequently. About every 2 weeks maybe?

So this weekend has been a very pleasant change. Yesterday, I rode my bike 50 miles as part of a group supported ride sponsored by TCMC. And today, I'm out to the Gunther's, to swim, bike and run. If you don't know Steve and Helen, then you're missing out. Not only on great workouts, but they are also great people. Not to mention all in the community that join them.

I also appreciate the invites that I get from Steve. It's just that he has a knack for picking an evening that I can't make it. One days the stars will align though!

There will be more TCMC rides and I am going to WIBA in July so (start crooning Thorogood again "if I do really prefer to train alone, I better get over myself".

So this weekend is a respite for me in several ways.

I'm smiling.

Happy Memorial Day and remember our Veterans.

  1. Hi Tim,
I love your rewrite of the song I Drink Alone:) I usually train by myself during the week and then I run with my running group on the weekends when I can:)

Woo hoo for getting out on a 50 mile bike ride with a group! How long does it usually take to ride for 50 miles? Just curious:)

    Happy Memorial Day!

  2. Julie, It was a 2 hour 45 minute ride. It was an easy ride, rarely pushed it hard but some steady work too. I think that it wouldn't be unreasonable to expect it done @ 2-1/2 hours.
You can alway join the TCMC rides for $10 if your not interested joining. Then find people that want to do the same speed. It's not hard at all as their are quite a variety of people and goals.

  3. You are multi-talented, love the adaptation! I find I need a balance of training by myself (I always work harder when I am by myself) and training with others (socialization, motivation) as well. Great bike ride, btw!

We are doing the Lakes Country Triathlon in Baxter in August. The lake was 70 degrees today, very chilly!

Happy Memorial Day to you as well : )

  4. I like the training alone thing too, but it is great to have some fun workouts with friends. Nice to see you at the bike ride and will see you at the Gunthers soon.

  5. I'm with you on training alone. Well, I guess not... I have my hubby. Sometimes it's nice to just go out alone and clear your head, but I could see how it would get lonely day after day. Any running groups you can join? Can you do more organized rides?
